La Dispute – Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair (2008)

March 15, 2010

I think I saw you in my sleep, darling / I think I saw you in my dreams / you were stitching up the seams / on every broken promise / that your body couldn’t keep

This album got quite a bit of press when it came out a couple years ago, but I have the pleasure of seeing the band live tonight, so I figured I’d post this today anyway. Somewhere at the Bottom of the River is the debut full-length from Grand Rapids group La Dispute, released after an EP and a few 7″‘s (I’ll probably post these other releases later on, once I work out some uploading issues I’m having). As far as genre goes, while it’s definitely a post-hardcore album, the band pushes past the typical formula and ends up in territory that hasn’t really been explored by many other bands. This is not your average group of At the Drive-In wannabes.

Their closest musical cousins are probably mewithoutYou, who I’d assume you’re familiar with (and if not, you should be). With vocals that run the gamut between uneasy spoken word, blistering screams, guttural shouts and even the occasional burst of clean singing, passion runs thick as blood through every track. It’s an album drenched in all forms of mental anguish and pain; regret, self-pity, insecurity, hopelessness and fury all have their place here. There are moments where it feels like an invasion of privacy to even be listening, with bitter honesty overwhelming the vocalist to the point that he can barely croak out the words. But while the emotion sometimes borders on the overwrought, maybe even comically so, the band always has good intentions. They’re dedicated to what they’re doing, and if you can let yourself into their world, you’ll find it tough to get back out.
