Wallace Vanborn – Free Blank Shots (2010)

March 28, 2010

I got tipped off about this band by a reader, and I’m glad I did. Wallace Vanborn is a Belgian three-piece who are apparently making some waves in their home country, but are totally unknown elsewhere. The most immediate comparison I thought of when listening to them was Queens of the Stone Age, since they have the same knack for making dirty, heavy music that at the same time is totally groovy and melodic. But they aren’t a rip-off act, because for all the similarities they still sound fresh and in a lot of ways exciting. As far as I know this is their debut album, and it does drag at times like so much stoner rock does; but there’s a lot of promise for this group, and Free Blank Shots is definitely an album worth hearing regardless. Wallace Vanborn is a band to watch.
