Watch the Tapes hits the airwaves!

April 13, 2010

Digital airwaves, anyway.

If you’ve been wondering why there’s been no new posts the past few days, it’s because I’ve been fully immersed with helping get this awesome project off the ground. A few comrades and myself took it upon ourselves to start a 24/7 digital radio stream, and in a matter of days we’ve gone from non-existence to something which has already exceeded my own personal expectations.

We haven’t had more than a few minutes of dead air since Saturday afternoon when we started advertising this crazy thing; there has been 24 hour-a-day streaming music from our vast host of DJs and other contributors. As of this writing, there are currently forty-seven DJs signed up with recurring shows throughout the week. You read that right: 47. In addition to those, we have various other helpful do-gooders who pick up the slack during times which aren’t yet scheduled for someone, despite not having their own personal slot. It goes without saying that with this many people involved, the music being played is incredibly diverse and there is something for all tastes.

In addition to doing a lot of the scheduling work (which is what’s been consuming most of my time), I am also a DJ! I have four time slots (all times in GMT-6, US Central Time):

  • Monday: 9 – 11 PM
  • Tuesday: 8 – 11 PM
  • Wednesday – 9 – 11 PM
  • Friday – 9 – 11 PM

so be sure to tune in and hear what I’m spinning! And don’t forget the other DJs; I’ve been listening during most of my free waking hours, and everyone I’ve heard has played great music.

Improvements and DJ additions are continuing to be made every day, and on the link for the stream there’s a Mibbit app which will take you to the IRC channel we have for the stream, #/music/radio on, so come chat with all the DJs and listeners! We’re still taking applications for DJs, so if there’s a time slot open which works for you, come on board! And if not, there will surely be adjustments made in the coming weeks, so fear not; something will probably open up! If you have any suggestions for ways to improve the stream or the site or anything, I and the rest of the people running things would love to hear them. This is still in its infancy but we don’t have any intention to let it remain stagnant or wither away. I’d love to have some of my readers as listeners to this, or even DJs. So cheers, and happy listening!

This is an awesome idea. I’ll be tuning in as often as possible.
