The Replacements – Let it Be (1984)

August 30, 2011

Geronimo! - Fuzzy Dreams

Out on the street for a living / you know it’s only begun / they’ve got you under their thumb

It’s a classic, and you quite possibly have heard this album anyway, so I’m not gonna talk about it like every other review, because you can find plenty of people talking about the content elsewhere. I’m gonna talk about what it means to me.

Let it Be is one of those special albums that has managed, over the years, to work its way into my life in a truly profound way. I can turn it on in times of turmoil, upheaval and stress, and for 33 minutes I can just…listen. Even though I know all the words and could probably hum the whole thing from memory, it washes over me and immerses me to this day. It’s found a little crevice in my soul to perch on, and it’s been there so long, there’s nothing that could knock it down anymore. It’s part of who I am.

Even if you don’t feel the same way about it, I hope you know what I mean, and I hope you’ve got music that you feel that way about. You should share it with someone.
