Freddie Gibbs - Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik

I’m fresh up out a city where most niggas broke / 60 percent unemployment, why you think we sellin’ dope?

Freddie Gibbs is an Indiana rapper who sounds like something straight out of the ’90s, but Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik, an independent, freely released mixtape with production funded largely by Intercope (he was signed for a couple years and never released an album before being dropped by the label), shows he’s got such an unfaltering flow and ear for hard beats that he rises above being just a throwback to yesteryear. His style has been heard before but he’s got a unique voice, especially in the landscape of hip-hop music today where most artists are trying to forge more varied ground musically or simply emulate their favorite rapper.

Gibbs isn’t at all worried about being straight-up gangsta hip-hop. There’s no autotune choruses, there’s no R&B ballads, there’s almost no current Top 40 pop sensibilities to speak of. This is just rap music that appeals to people smoking bud, being broke and trying to change their situation. And while that may keep him from really blowing up and probably got him kicked off Interscope, hopefully he keeps doing what he’s doing because he’s fucking good at it and he does it with heart. Check the sample, get into this guy. Keep an eye out for a full-length.
