La Dispute – Wildlife (2011)

La Dispute - Wildlife

I’ve been thinking of exile / I’ve been thinking hit the highway and head up north / I’ve been thinking cross the bridge and don’t come back

These Grand Rapids boys really blew it out of the water on this one. I was unsure they could top their debut, a record plenty of you probably love, but they did in spades. The vision is clearer, the songcraft is tighter, and Wildlife blows through a nearly hour-long tracklist without even what seems to be a missed step to be found. Vocalist Jordan Dreyer seems to have gotten older and wiser, and his lyrics on this sophomore effort show him to be a much more versatile songwriter than people thought before, not trapped in a fairly singular strand of thought like he has been in the past.

They’ve really come into their own with this album. It’s been nice to see it get some attention from more major publications and outlets (NPR!), so maybe they’re getting more mainstream favor these days. They certainly deserve it.
